Fighting ants

Which ant remedies really work and which ones are a waste of money? Johan tests them all and gives honest advice on DIY versus professional.

Controlling ants: Can I do it myself?

Good news: at ant control you can often do something yourself - unlike bedbugs. But whether it is effective depends on where the nest is. Let me be honest about what works and what doesn't.

When Can You Try It Yourself?

You can try it yourself if the nest is outside your house (in the garden, under tiles), you know roughly where the nest is, and it is a small to medium-sized colony (not several large colonies). In these situations, DIY methods have a good chance of success.

But you really need professional help if the nest is inside (in cavity walls, under floors), you can't find the nest after one week of searching, you have several large colonies, you've been at it for weeks without success, or flying ants appear en masse inside (nest is near or inside).

The Basics of Ant Control

This is crucial to understand: you have to tackle the nest, not just the ants you see. If you kill only the workers that walk in your kitchen, the queen will continue to lay eggs in the nest. And within a few days, you have the same number of ants again.

This is why most methods work with lokaa s: the ants eat the poison, bring it to the nest, feed it to the queen and larvae, and so the whole nest dies. This takes 1-2 weeks, but is much more effective than direct-acting sprays.

Realistic Expectations

Even with the best DIY methods: don't expect ants to be gone in a day. It takes at least a week, often two weeks. You first see MORE ants (they come to the bait). After 3-7 days, you see fewer ants. After 10-14 days, they are usually gone. Sometimes you have to repeat the treatment.

If you still have the same number of ants after 3 weeks, your method is not working. Time to call a professional.

DIY methods that DO work

Okay, you want to try it yourself. Here are the methods I really seen working with customers - not internet fables, but proven effective approaches.

Lure do zen and Gel stations (Best DIY Option)

This is my number one advice for DIY. Bait boxes contain a sweet substance mixed with slow-acting poison. Ants eat it, bring it to the nest, poisoning the whole colony.

Which buy: In DIY stores, you can find branded cheese boxes for 10-15 euros (pack of 2-4 pieces). Pay attention to the active ingredient - dinotefuran or fipronil work best. Avoid cheap Chinese brands - they often don't work.

How to use: Place them along the ant trail (close to where you see them walking), near where they enter (if you can find it), and near the nest if you have found it. Use several boxes - 1 is too few. Replace every 2-3 months. Be patient - it takes 7-14 days before you see results.

Advantages: Safe for pets and children (closed box), works on the whole colony, easy to use, affordable.

Disadvantages: Takes time, works only when ants are looking for sweet food, does not reach the nest if it is far away or deep.

Boiling Water (Direct Nest Attack)

If you have found the nest and it is within reach, boiling water works surprisingly well. Simple but effective.

How to do: Boil a large pan (3-5 litres) of water. Pour it SLOWLY over the nest opening. Use several pans - one pan is usually not enough. Do this early in the morning or late at night (most ants will be in the nest then). Repeat after 2-3 days to kill surviving eggs.

Advantages: Free, no chemicals, immediate effect.

Disadvantages: Works only if you can find and reach the nest. Does not go deep enough on large nests. Can kill plants and grass. Dangerous - be careful with boiling water!

Vinegar (For pheromone washes, Not For Nests)

Vinegar does not kill ants, but it does remove their pheromone spores. Useful as a supplement, not a main method.

How to use: Mix 50/50 vinegar and water in a plant sprayer. Spray over the ant trail and where they enter. Wipe with a cloth after. Repeat daily until the ants are gone.

Impact: Ants won't find the route to your kitchen again. But the nest remains intact, so you don't solve the problem. Use this IN COMBINATION with bait boxes.

Diatomaceous earth (Earth powder) - With reservations

This natural powder dries out ants that walk on it. It works, but not as well as bait boxes.

How to use: Sprinkle a thin layer along the ant trail and around the nest. Keep it dry - wet powder does not work. Replace after rain. Wait 1-2 weeks for results.

Advantages: Natural, safe for pets, also works against other insects.

Disadvantages: Ants can avoid it. Does not reach the queen if the nest is deep. Mess ig - white powder everywhere. Does not work in rain.

This does NOT work (save your money)

When should you call a professional?

Okay, you've tried. Or you doubt you can do it yourself. When should you really call a professional for ant control? Here are the signs.

Call A Professional If...

The nest is inside (in cavity walls, under floors, in insulation) - you won't solve this yourself. You still have the same number of ants after 2-3 weeks of trying by yourself. You see flying ants INSIDE (means nest is near or inside). You have several large colonies in your garden. You can't find the nest after a week of searching. You have a catering or business space (no room for experiments).

What A Professional Does (That You Can't)

Why is professional combat more effective? Let me explain what I do:

Professional resources: I have access to much stronger gels and powders. My bait gel works 5x faster than supermarket boxes. I use residual agents that remain effective for weeks.

Specialist techniques: For nests in cavity walls: injection method (I drill small holes and spray treatment into the cavity). For nests under floors: special long needles. Barrier treatments around the whole house (prevents new colonies).

Experience and knowledge: I find nests you don't. After 20 years, I can see where the nest is in 10 minutes. I know what species of ant it is and what method fits it. I prevent them from coming back.

Guarantee: After my treatment: follow-up and monitoring. Do they come back within 3 months? I treat again, free of charge. You don't have that certainty at DIY.

Cost and Revenue

A professional ant control costs around €150-350, depending on the situation. Sounds expensive? Add up what you spend on: bait boxes (3-4 packs at 12 euros = 48 euros), other remedies that don't work (50-100 euros), your own time (spending weeks), and stress and frustration (priceless).

Plus: I get it right the first time. With DIY, you often spend months trying. Do the math on which is more effective.

Frequently asked questions about Ant Control

I often get these questions about controlling ants. Want to know more? Call for personal advice.

For DIY: bait boxes or gel stations. These are containers of sweet bait mixed with slow-acting poison. Ants eat it, take it to the nest, poisoning the whole colony. Why this works best: you tackle the nest (not just the ants you see), safe for pets and children (closed system), and works long-term (1-2 weeks). Buy brands with dinotefuran or fipronil. Place several boxes along the ant trail. Be patient - it takes 7-14 days. Doesn't work after 3 weeks? Then professional help is needed.

Vinegar does not kill ants effectively, but it does remove their pheromone spores. It is useful as a supplement, not a main method. How it works: ants leave a scent trail for other ants. Vinegar removes that scent. Other ants no longer find the trail. But: the nest remains intact, the queen continues to lay eggs, after a few days they find a new route. Use vinegar (50/50 with water) to remove spores, but combine it with bait boxes to tackle the nest. Vinegar alone will not solve the problem.

With bait boxes (best DIY method): 1-2 weeks. Day 1-3: you will see MORE ants (they will flock to the bait - this is good!). Day 4-7: ant activity decreases. Day 10-14: ants are usually gone. With professional treatment: often faster, 3-7 days for outdoor nests, 7-14 days for indoor nests. Note: if you still have the same number of ants after 3 weeks, your method is not working. Repeat the treatment or call a professional. Direct methods (boiling water on nest): effect within 1-2 days, but only if you reach the nest properly.

Supermarket sprays: no, not effective. They only kill the ants you touch directly. The nest remains intact. The queen continues to lay eggs. Within 2 days, you have the same number of ants again. Some sprays even make it worse - ants 'flee' deeper into the house or move the nest. Professional sprays (which I use): yes, they do work. But not as a stand-alone method. I use them as part of an overall approach: residual treatment (stays effective for weeks), barrier around the house, combined with gel treatment of the nest. Advice: save the money on supermarket sprays. Buy bait boxes or call a professional.

If the nest is outside and accessible: yes, you can try. Best DIY methods: boiling water (pour 3-5 litres slowly over the nest opening, repeat after 2 days), bait gel or boxes placed near the nest entrance. But: this only works if you have really found the nest (not just an exit), the nest is not too deep (boiling water only goes 20-30cm deep), and it is a single colony (not multiple nests). If the nest is inside (cavity wall, under floor): no, you won't solve this yourself. Then you need professional equipment (injection equipment, long needles, strong agents).
